Dear Grace Yusuf Baba
A LETTER TO A LAW STUDENT
I have chosen today not to shower you with naturally earned accolades and wishes as many would have done and are still all the more doing. I choose to remind you of the"who" you are and the "what" you are becoming.
You are a human being. The same human being that some Religions consider as the Image of God, Science refers to as Homo Sapiens, Philosophy talks of as a Complex Thinking Being, and Psychology calls a Person. It therefore implies that if every human being have the same biologically recognisable features in line with the dual gender specifications of male and female, then every human being is of equal living potential and value. It means that the value of your life is equal to the value of the life of the poor orphan kneeling and begging across the streets. You are never at anytime a more human being than the other.
What you are becoming is an upholder of Justice, a defender of human rights and a symbol of truth. Do not just think of yourself as becoming a legal counselor but convince yourself that you are becoming what a legal counselor is and ought to be. Know this! You are not defending the Justice system, you are only upholding it, because a Justice system should it self be just. You are not a defender of animal rights but a defender of human rights. Defend the right to own property and not the property that is owned. Condemn the ill actions of men and not the men themselves. Even when you rise to the status of a judge know that you are not the judge. See yourself as a helper rather than a defendant.
Transparency should be your watchword because every desire to do your work is a desire to save a life. When property causes dispute among clients, focus on the right to own such property rather than the means. Every decision at the court house has an inevitable consequence on the society. Therefore do not ever cross-examine for the purpose of discrediting the credibility of an adverse wittness whom you know very well to be speaking the truth. Do not get stuck to exonerating that client whom conscience had already proven guilty all for the sake of your payment.
You are not a tool of utility neither are your clients objects of extortion. Do not always think of how useful u could be but think of how conscientiously fulfilling you would want to feel at the close of every objective and sincere case. Worry less about the dangers of truthfulness and think more often about the undying legacies of trust, honestly and integrity. Do not fight or struggle to become a Hall of Famer at the Bar because legal integrity is not assured by the number of cases won but by the standards of truth upheld.
At the end of the day my dear Grace Yusuf Baba, you are only a human being, of equal value with that akara seller seeking Justice, of equal importance with the fetus yearning to behold the light of the sun. Therefore, you are never at anytime indispensable. Your role might be unique but it is always assumable. And so, be a human being, become an upholder of Justice and a defender of Rights but never become less a human being or a god. I wish you love, I wish you strength. Enjoy your Celebration.
